If you would like to order a patent translation, please see our Ordering a Patent Translation guide to find out what information we will need to process your order.

Translation order received

The translation is assigned to a translator and a checker according to the language pair and subject area. The documents are logged and saved securely and all details about the order are carefully recorded. Any similar previous jobs sent by you are identified to ensure consistency across documents. If you have requested that we use a certain set of terminology, your preferences are recorded at this stage and passed on to the translator.

Translation

The translator, who is either a member of our experienced in-house team or one of our highly skilled freelance translators, translates the text, carrying out careful research to ensure the accuracy of terminology.

First check

The same translator thoroughly checks his or her own work to correct any errors, ensure consistency and check overall cohesion.

Second check

It's well-known that it is very difficult to pick up on your own errors. At Priory Translations, a second translator also performs a rigorous word-by-word and sentence-by-sentence check on the translation. He or she consults a terminology list provided by the first translator, but also carries out his or her own research. The checker amends the translation and offers other suggestions to the translator.

Review

The checker passes his or her changes back to the original translator, who carefully reviews them. A discussion between the translator and checker about certain points often ensues, until both reach an agreement.

Additional quality control

Depending on the document, a final check may be carried out, such as a partial check by a third translator or a read-through of the final target-language text. We know that every minor detail can have a major impact when it comes to intellectual property, so we make sure that our translation process is as thorough as possible to produce translations of the highest quality and precision.

Delivery

We will deliver your translation by the deadline agreed with you at the start of the project (if not before), with any additional notes about the translation provided in a separate file for your convenience. To help you keep track, we will send our invoice either at the same time or very soon thereafter.

OCR scanning

We use OCR scanning software to scan pdf files, image files or hard copies of documents to be translated, which means we are able to accept documents in virtually any format. However, our checking processes are always carried out using the original document to ensure any errors generated during the scanning process cannot be carried over into the translation.

Adaptation of diagrams, cover sheets etc.

According to your requirements, we will adapt diagrams, cover sheets and layouts to provide target-language versions that match the originals as closely as possible. The formatting of the translated text to match the original is included in our standard rate for translation, but there is usually a small additional charge for the adaptation of diagrams and cover sheets.

Certification

On request, we are able to provide a self-certification signed by the translator for a small fee. Other types of certification, such as notarisation, may also be possible - please ask when you place the order.
